I just left the new Coolreader sitting at a page in a book I was reading, and a few hours later I picked it up to find nothing would respond. A reset just caused it to beep 4 times. Removing the battery and replacing it had no effect.

At this point I had to assume it had flattened it's battery, so I plugged it into a usb port, and after a minute, it beeped and restarted. Just to test, I removed the usb power source, and it reported 'low battery' so that's definitely what happened.

So, looks like, amongst other things, Coolreader does indeed flatten batteries.

I am going to reload the previous firmware after it recharges.

4 second page turns and other bugs and crashes in Coolreader

There's some things that are very buggy in Coolreader.

It get's in a state where a single page turn takes 4 seconds of intense green led flashing. This is particular to the book you are reading. You can open a new one and the page turn speed is normal - then go back to your first book, and the speed is still slow.

Also, make sure to set a bookmark before you fiddle with the menu. It can crash out completely to the PP file list, losing your place again. It's done this to me a few times now.

Just before I typed this, I watched it go through about 60 seconds of thrashing the green light before it bombed out. After this it crashed the PP when I tried to reopen the book - had to reset it. The upside of this crash is that page turns are now back to normal for that book.

Also, never plug the reader into your computer via USB while Coolreader is open in a book. It will totally forget where you are up to in the book.

Another small gripe - 'Show manual' from the menu just dumps you back in the book.

On the Pocket Pro is there a way to make the pop up menu font size bigger? Geeze, it's tiny!
Also, without updating the firmware are fb2 files readable on the pocket pro? And can you pick different fonts to use with the fb2 books on the reader, or is this something that has to be embedded like epubs? At least I think epubs have to be embedded using Calibre. I could be wrong. I'd like to be able to make the font darker.
 Thanks.

Pulling off the latest firmware upgrade temporary!

Dear All:

Answers to our questions to the factory last night opened more questions than were answered.

There are some problems for those that read in languages other than English and questions about Text-To-Speech and more.

Until we are satisfied that everything has been worked out fully, we are taking the latest firmware upgrade off of our websites. Some parts worked great regarding FB2 and Coolreader... but there are still major questions about .LIT that remain.

This is temporary. We are pulling it down off the site until ALL of it is exactly right for our Pocket PRO users. The factory did a lot more in this upgrade than they told us they did... and we want to get ALL of it right.

IF any problems developed on your device... please contact tech support and we will try to get you back to the earlier upgrade. The tollfree number is: 1-866-368-8788.

I apologize for the problem and inconvenience. We are going to work now on getting things to where we are fully satisfied!

Astak Mentor 6" (EB600BLK / EB600WHT)

Hi. I was pondering about buying one of these devices (model numbers are for black case/white case, otherwise identical). Thing is, i've noticed information for the Mentor is scarce and, even worse, not consistent. For example, even on Astaks' site the device is mentioned to support MP3 playback on the product page ( http://www.astak.com/product.asp?serial=EB-EB600BLK ), and then it goes to mention specifically it has no MP3 support in the FAQ ( http://www.astak.com/faq_mentor.asp#q1_4 ).

So, maybe someone here owns one of these and might be able to give me more accurate details. Audio support? Gray levels? Avaliable memory? Supported formats? Any information is appreciated, thanks in advance! :)

Web2FB2 converts web pages to FB2 and EPUB files

Greetings,

This is probably "old news" for most of you, but in my exploration of the FB2 eBook format, re-invigorated by the additional capabilities of the upgraded CoolReader software in the March 2010 firmware update, I discovered a really fun website.

*http://web2fb2.net*/ (http://web2fb2.net/)

You enter the URL of a page you'd like to convert and it offers you an FB2 (zipped) and/or EPUB file for download. It only captures the top level of the site so if follows none of the links. But for grabbing a Wikipedia article or an essay to read later, it works great. While it offers some choices for tweaking the output, for most of the things I've tried the default settings work just fine.

And...It's free, although there is a PayPal donation link if you are so inclined.

I imagine similar things could be done with Calibre, although when I first attempted this I was very new to the program and failed miserably.

But this solution is so easy; even *I* can do it.

Enjoy!

Save a copy of your old firmware if upgrading!

@all,

I downloaded and installed the new firmware release (dated 3/12/2010), and it seems to have re-introduced two of the nasty problems I had with the original firmware that shipped with my EZ Reader - i.e. extremely short battery life (I got less than a day with the new firmware on a fully charged unit) and also lots of missed key presses.

The previous firmware release (dated 12/10/2009) solved both these issues - I was routinely getting several weeks or a month without ever having to turn the unit off, and very rarely had a missed key press.

I'm recharging the unit now, and will give the new firmware one more chance - but I'm very glad I saved a copy of the previous firmware since I expect I will be reverting to it tomorrow. I recommend others grab a copy of the previous version in case it disappears from the www.astak.com site (I notice it's not listed on www.theezreader.com).

Ross.

P.S. I never got to the bottom of the original power problem (since it was solved) but I recall reading somewhere in these forums that it may have been due to the unit failing to power down the SD card correctly - if this is the case, this issue may not affect people without an SD card installed.

I'm debating about whether to update my PP with the new firmware. To those who have used it, do you think it's worth it? I don't want to have to do a heap of technical things with it either, just want it to work simply as it does now.

Tinkering With Coolreader CSS (and Some Original Writing For Yew)

All of the five Coolreader CSS files...

http://sourceforge.net/projects/crengine/files/CoolReader3/CR3.0.16/new-cr3-ui-data-20090311.tar.gz/download

...appear to be exactly the same. Yet the reader is reacting differently to each one.

If yew load an FB2 file, the top of the screen shows author and book name.

If yew load a TXT file, the top of the screen shows the title of the TXT file.

If yew load an HTML file, the top of the screen shows nothing at all.

I am thinking this has to do with metadata, but I can't find anything in the CSS files that would allow yew to configure this so it is more universal.

The good news is these files have definitely solved my double spacing between paragraph problems. (Yay, Dave-S!) I have also found how to change the paragraph indent and text justification.

Contrary to what was reported earlier, I have found that even with the CSS operative, the user settings still function. So yew can set a font in the CSS file and override it. At least *I* am able to. But then who knows I may be something wrong!

I am trying to find how to add just ONE SPACE between paragraphs, but no luck so far. I'm a writer, not a programmer. (Despite my best attempts, no luck getting the publisher to release my work as ebooks. But it hasn't been for the lack of trying!)

I'd also like the title at the top to show the title of the file regardless of what type of file it is, but no luck there so far, either.

Maybe if some of us keep tinkering with the CSS, we can post links? That would be fun. :)

I have put an email into the people at Coolreader asking for documentation of the CSS files. If I hear back from them, I will let yew know.

NOTE: The link below is to some ZIP files from my website.

One file is some promotional items from the two books (including the one of the left), while the other file contains the entire 11 issue run of the column I wrote for the "Autism at Home Series" between 2008 and 2009. The Autism at Home Series files are in the order they were published and are in PDF format as submitted to the publisher.

Also there are some published personal interviews I have done and a several newspaper articles written about me around the country.
