Trying to get unicode fonts to work on PRS-700

Hi,

I am creating a book that requires lots of special accented characters from a few different European languages. I am creating my book in Word using the Bookcreator template, which exports to HTML and uses Calibre's ebook-convert to convert the HTML to the output format (I am outputting to LRF and EPUB).

The output files themselves appear fine (viewing the LRF in Calibre's LRF viewer and viewing the HTML inside the EPUB shows them to be correctly displaying the various unicode characters.

However, when I put the files on my PRS-700 I get a lot of these special characters missing (or in the EPUB they are often replaced with '?'.

So is there a way to get these files displaying properly (preferably without modifying the reader itself)? Is it a matter of embedding fonts into the EPUB output somehow?

Or (as I fear) is the PRS-700 simply not capable of displaying certain characters?

Or perhaps there are certain fonts that work with the PRS-700 better than the fonts I'm using (Calibri and Cambria).

*_SOLVED:_*
I found this thread:
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58901
and managed to upload the relevant font onto my device. It all works now. Now it's just a matter of working out how to automate this (and I suppose I also need to find some free fonts to embed in my books).

Hi there,
My name is Carol and I'm looking to purchase a Sony PRS-600 at tax time. I have a whole bunch of questions though, I'm hoping that someone can help me.
First, is there any restriction on the books you can buy for it in Canada and is there a way to work around it (if there is) by having a US address like you can on the Amazon store?
Second, Does it have folders to organize the content you have on it?
Can you read ANY PDF on it or are there certian criteria they have to meet? (I'm VERY computer illiterate, have no idea about stuff like that.)
How do you get Google books? Couldn't find anything on the Google books website that gave the option of downloading.
Are there other websites that you can buy books from?
Can you get all the same books for it that you can for a Kindle, even if you have to pay more, is the same content available?
Can you take notes on the PDF's you're able to put on it?
Also, I can't find an NKJV Bible to put on it, that's what our church uses and I'd love to have one to take notes with, but I can't find one on the Sony book site, is there someplace else that I can look for one?

Thank you for your time, I hope that I've been able to ask the questions I have the right way.
   Have a wonderful day,
    Carol

PRS-700 Generic cover thumbnails

Hello all.

Since I usually carry less than 20 eBooks on my PRS-700 I prefer to have it in thumbnail mode, so that I can *see* the book covers for easy selection.

Within the last couple of months, after transferring ebooks to my PRS-700, the correct book cover is displayed momentarily and rather small, then quickly disappears and is replaced by a generic thumbnail, one showing the publisher's trademark, which is barely distinguishable from any other cover.

I am currently reading a sci-fi series, and the publisher hasn't changed, it is still Ballantine. The covers, even though they show correctly in the eBook Library, are not properly displayed on the reader.

Is this because the publisher doesn't have the proper "rights" to copy the cover or what?

Has anyone else noticed this or has this always been the case and I've just noticed it now.

Thanks. Wetdogeared

*edit*

These are all ebooks bought from the eBook Store in lrx format

Drag and drop onto eBook Library with Windows 7

Just got a new laptop running Windows 7, 64-bit Home Premium Edition.

eBook Library runs fine, with one peculiarity:

I normally load books onto the Reader by doing a "drag and drop" from Windows Explorer onto the "Reader" icon in eBook Library. I don't seem to be able to do that with Windows 7 - when I drag a file from Explorer, the drop cursor remains a "forbidden" sign when it's over the Reader icon in eBook Library.

Does anyone know if there's a fix for this? Obviously I can add files using the "Computer" navigator in eBL, but doing it directly from Windows Explorer is much more convenient.

PRSA-CL6 light/case

I just bought a PRSA-CL6 light/case.

I think the light is ideal for reading in the dark, evenly and adequately illuminating the screen, but I have a separate issue, and I'm wondering if it's just my unit or if others' are the same.

The gooseneck is terrible. The light will not stay in any of the positions I put it in, and I am constantly having to readjust it, or even hold it with my thumb, as I read. It is resistant to being rotated, and will not allow me to center it above the screen parallel to it. It "fights" my every effort to reposition it.

No one mentioned this in their reviews in the other thread.

Is my unit defective, or are they all like this? I didn't expect the gooseneck to be the issue, if any, with this unit, but I think I cannot keep it if this is the case. It needs to stay where I put it, or it's more trouble than it's worth.

Thanks.

I sent Sony an email asking a few questions about the new 900 due to come out. I wanted to know if it will come in any other colour besides black, if the main menu screen is the same as with the 600 and if it has a light built in. Not overly hard questions I would think. So here is their answer.

"Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for shopping Sony Style!

I apologize for the inconvenience.

Regarding your request, we are not train to answer those questions that is why I am referring you to the right department for a quick answer or response.

Thank you for choosing Sony Style!

their response was to go into a Sony store and ask them

any harm from leaving the reader turned on?

IS there any harm to the screen, if you leave your e-ink reader turned on all the time? Just leave it on?

For example in the old CRT screens, you could "burn in" a picture by leaving the screen on all the time on a static image (hence we had screen savers).

Is there any equivalent danger with e-ink? I know the physics is different here, but wondering because sometimes on my sony reader I do see a faint outline of the previous image which remains for a while (it eventually goes away). Wondering if there is any kind of 'burn in' effect, or any other downside, to leaving my reader on (with an image on the screen) 24 hours a day. After all it doesnt consume any battery that way, so why not just leave it on?

PRS600 Battery Life

I didn't see this subject posted before, but unless I am extremely unlucky I am sure someone must have noted this before.

When I first got my PRS600 it was plugged into the PC USB port quite often. But now that I have a queue of books on the reader waiting to be read it is now only connected when I want to copy a book on or to charge the reader.

Is it just me, or does the battery only last about 6 or 8 days before it needs charging.

I read for about an hour a day.
Do the odd dictionary lookup.
Turn about 20 or so pages before I call it a night.

The battery indicator seems to drop one notch every 2 days or so.

As the reader was supposed to be able to manage 7000 page turns, I expected my humble reading rate would last me a long time. Much longer than a week at any rate.

I suspect that if I just left the ready in standby for a week the charge would probably deplete at the same rate.

I have noted that if I actually power down the reader, then it is OK.

PRS-300 ePub, Incorrect Page Numbers?

Hey there,

I've just got a PRS 300 and I've converted several books to ePub using Calibre.

They work fine - but the number of page reporting is way off. I have a book that is 170 pages when I view it from Calibre, but only 63 inside of the reader.

They will also go to the final page then allow me to read continually for several pages after.

Is something wrong with the reader, or the way I'm making books?

Thanks for any help.

Hello!

Now that I've actually managed to pry my e-book out of Sony's grasp, I'm wondering what the 'best format' is to read on the PRS-600?

I have lots of text, word and pdf files that I've generated over the years and Calibre for conversion.

What would be the most useful format to have documents in?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

PRS-600 Possibility to enhance contrast

One can try the following procedure on PRS-600:

1. Open the free hand drawing and draw an area completely black.
2. Erase this black area.
3. Take a close look, the erased area actually looks 'whiter' than the white background around this area.

So the idea is, the hardware can in principle make the white color whiter, thus enhance the overall contras. It might be that the firmware needs better tuning.
