I just got my 600 (boyfriend got it for my bday, what a sweetie, huh?:p) annnnnddd....my computer stopped working. I sent it away to have it totally wiped out and redone and I guess my question is-how do I get my version of the Sony ebookstore back? I bought my 505 and it came with the disk, but I cannot find it and dummy me, I gave my other 505 away :smack:. If I download it online it gives me the new version, and I have to say for some reason it's not striking my fancy. Thanks, fellas!

P.s. Not "my" version, but you know what I mean, lol!

PRS-900 Daily Edition Battery Life and Wi-Fi

There was a thread here somewhere (can't find it) about a month ago pointing out the PRS-900 being listed here (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665981151) on Sony's website.

But did anyone notice this page (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYSearchQuickView?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665981151) before?

It lists the battery life at a mere 1200 page-turns for ePub. In contrast, the 600 is listed at 6800.

That's a pretty steep drop off. It must mean with wireless turned on, but it doesn't specify.

Needless to say, I don't think 1200 page-turns would go over very well with most people. Hopefully the listing is a mistake.

Also listed on that page is this:

Wi-Fi : Supports HSPA, UMTS, Edge, and GPRS data services with two bands (850 and 1900 MHz).

I think that's the first official mention of Wi-Fi, is it not?

PRS-600 Unable to authorize!

Hello there!

I have a problem with my newly bought PRS-600 (or, perhaps, rather the eBook Library application).

When I log in I come to a "Oops, the page you requested is temporarily unavailable." screen, but I am at least logged in afterwards and can navigate through "My account" to the "Manage devices" page.

When I click the "Authorize this device" button on the "Manage devices" page I get an error page:

---Quote---
/_!_\ Unable to access eBook Store
Check your network settings to ensure you have access to the internet.
-5
---End Quote---
I read a bunch of threads about problems appearing when using Symantec/Norton antivirus and the solution was to inactivate the network protection. I have Symantec Antivirus installed but only with file system protection and the problem remains even when i turn that off.

I also tried installing Windows XP anew in a VMWare virtual machine but got the same error.

It kind of makes me regret that i bought a couple of books through the Sony store before the device arrived... :smack:

Any ideas?

PRS-300 BJ's to sell Sony Pocket Ed. BUNDLE for $199

I went to BJ's today to buy a pair of slacks. Last time I was there in August they had a Sony Reader, probably the 505. I saw nothing on display today, so I went to the information counter to ask where I could find the eBook readers they were offering.

The lady told me that they have nothing on the floor at the moment, but they will soon be selling this: She went to the cage, and came back with a brown box with very little writing on it. It said, "Sony Reader Pocket Edition Bundle".

There was no description of what the contents included. I asked her the price, so she scanned it and said "$199."

Since I did not intend to make a purchase, I did not ask her to open the box.

I then went to Best Buy. They had on display the 300 and the 600. The 300 was $199. They also had a cover for $30 and a wall charger for $30.

So *maybe* BJ's bundle will include both the cover and the wall charger, thus providing a savings of $60.

By the way, I received a card in the mail which gave me a free BJ's membership for 60 days. Perhaps that card is a gimmick, and they will offer the free membership to anyone who walks in. Otherwise, they have a special going on - $35 for a 14-month membership.

PRS-300 Battery life - maintenance

Hi everyone, I purchased the PRS-300 recently and have been transferring ebooks to the reader almost daily. As the 300 does not have a memory card, there's no other way to transfer ebooks besides connecting the reader to my PC. However, this will invariably charge the reader even when the battery is almost full.

I'm curious to know if this constant charging will reduce the battery life of the reader. In addition, is it better to let the reader's battery charge to 100% every time it is connected to the PC, or is it ok to disconnect right after I finish transferring the ebooks?

Thanks in advance!

Hi intend to buy the Sony PRS-300, but first, I would like to know if there are known issues with Linux since it is my main OS on my computer. And it would be nice for those of you who have that reader to tell me what is best to use as software for the management of your ebooks .

Looking forward to your replies, before buying the toy next weekend...:D

PRS-600 File management advices ?

Hi,

Okay I got my PRS 600 now. The device is good.

BUT file management is a pain for me right now, be it through Ebook Librairy or Calibre  Both interfaces and philosophies are far from intuitive, at least for me. What would take me 1 minute to organize within file explorer take me 30 min with Calibre or Sony Software

My problem is that I transfer files from 2 computers (home and work), and that most of my readings are not regular ebooks, but homemade or dowloaded PDFs (with missing or bad metadata). I can download a lot of little documents, for example saved web pages. I don't want to spend time metadating, tagging, doing collections and so on. But I still need to organize my files. If I create directories on the SD card, the files appear as mixed in the reader and it is sometimes difficult to identify them, as the title displayed is metadata, not real file name. An explorer-like file browser would be perfect for the device but it doesn't work that way.

Any solution or method ? This tagging stuff is ruining my experience :(

I busted my ereader cherry with a 600, which I returned after a day due to contrast and glare issues. I picked up a 300, which is great, and I may indeed end up keeping... but I wish I had a bit larger screen.

The 505 sounds good, since I'm hearing it's basically the 300 with a few more features... but I also understand that it handles PDF's poorly, indeed worse than the 300, despite the 300's smaller screen... and I need to read PDF's. Not technical graphics mind you, but procedural text documents that differ from a book's format.

The most important thing to me with a reader is text clarity. I need the screen to glare-free (as glare-free as clear plastic or glass can be, at any rate), and have excellent contrast.

Any suggestions? What does the grapevine say about how the upcoming Nook's screen will perform, for instance? Thanks very much!

Having been following ebook readers for a few months and still cannot decide because I cannot see any of them with my own eyes.

Anyone living in Bangkok who has any kind of ebook reader device(s), can let me have a look?

I've been reading ebooks on Palm, PocketPDA, and iPhone for several years; not sure to take a plunge into a specific ebook reader device until I have a chance to touch and see it.

Thanks

PRS-300 for 2600 Airmiles (Canada) - first impressions

Last Tuesday (Oct.27th) evening, I was looking through the Airmiles.ca rewards catalogue and discovered that the Sony PRS-300 was listed. I really hadn't planned on getting a Sony Pocket Edition - I really have way too many ebook readers as it is - but I had somewhat more than enough points to order it and wasn't saving them for anything special, so I decided "what the heck" and ordered it. The site told me it would take three days to process my order and three-four weeks to ship. Imagine my shock when I got home Friday evening (Oct.30th) and it had already arrived via UPS! Fastest 3-4 weeks delivery that I ever saw...

My first impression of the PRS-300 was that I liked the look and feel of it a lot more than I'd expected to (I own a 505 and I frankly prefer my Bebook or Astak Pocket Pro). My mom's first reaction was that it was "so cute".

I'm still not a huge fan of the Sony menus but, on the other hand, my mom doesn't seem to mind them and the smaller, lighter 300 negates the one thing that she didn't like with the 505 (namely, the weight). The 300 has a snappy response time and, so far, the battery life is looking quite promising (charged it Friday night and, a couple of Harlequin books later, it still hasn't lost a bar).

It worked well with my library's Overdrive subscription and PDF reflow is not too bad (other than the annoying half-pages created by hard page breaks in conjunction with a medium font size - which is most likely not the device's fault). I'm not impressed with ePubs so far (ridiculously huge margins waste far too much screen room) but, in all fairness, that's probably really an ePub publisher issue rather than an issue with the device.

My initial feelings - I like the 300 a lot more than I'd expected to but I probably won't be trading in my Astak Pocket Pro (once I get my warranty replacement unit) for it. I miss the SD card slot a lot, still don't overly like the Sony menus, and really, really miss my beloved folders. In fact, rather than having to mess around transferring what I'd previously been reading on my Pocket Pro, I've traded my mom to get my old Bebook back for now (I can just stick the card from the Pocket Pro right in and pick up where I left off) and let her test out the 300. Initially, she thinks that she's going to like the 300 but she is a bit uncertain about the 5" screen. If she turns out to like the 300, it'll be staying and I'll sell off another 6" reader (probably the 505). If it doesn't work out for her, well, I'm sure that I'll have no problem finding it a new home.

I miss the SD card slot a lot, still don't overly like the Sony menus, and really, really miss my beloved folders.
PRS-600 PRS600 plus Charger $279 at Sam's

I just happened to notice that Sam's Club is now carrying the Touch Edition Black on their website. At the end of the write up they state that it includes the charger. It sounds like the combo deal that Costco ran on the 505.

Given the $30 value of the charger, the net $250 price on 600 is the best price I have seen so far. It looks like they are also going to carry the 300, but I didn't look at the details.

I called a Sam's in Vegas today, but the 600's had not made it into store inventory yet.

Good luck to all who are still waiting to get their new Reader. Someone post as soon as they are seen at a store.

PRS-600 Picked up a used 600, demo mode on

I just received a PRS-600 that has been used. It's in good shape, but is missing the stylus (any idea on where to get a replacement?), and it won't allow me to adjust most of the settings, saying it is in Demo Mode.

I've read around a little, and found some related topics regarding the 505. I have updated the device to the latest firmware from Sony, and it's still apparently in Demo Mode.

I have access to a Mac and a PC, so whichever works best for resolving this, I have. ;)
