PRS-600 Freezes Every Time I Select my Reader

I just got a Mac. I downloaded and installed Sony's reader library without problem. I downloaded all the books I previously bought from the Sony store without a problem. I transferred all the books I downloaded from this site's free downloads section from a flash drive on to my Mac without a problem. But when I plug in my reader (a PRS-600), that is when I run into a problem. I open up the Sony library program, and it picks up the reader and displays it on the left pane. But when I click on it (the reader), everything freezes (only the Sony library freezes, not the whole computer). If I plug in me ereader and click on other things like the store or library, it works okay. But once I click on the reader itself, it freezes.

Any suggestions as to what I should do?

German-English dictionary for Sony

Does anybody knows a good German-English-German dictionary for the Sony ereader. I am aware that this will be a epub file without any fancy search options (except the built in OS search function).
Or: Has anybody an other bi-lingual dictionary that they could recommend?

Hi all,

Am thinking about getting a PRS-600. I am currently using Stanza on my iphone for ebook reading.

I've got a couple of basic questions:

1. When reading a book, I presume it shows what page you are on, as well as total number of pages. However, does it also either tell you how many pages are left in the current chapter or show you that you are on page x of x for the chapter?

2. When viewing your library, is there any indicator that tells you if the book has been read or not? In Stanza, there is a little circle next to each book. The circle progressively fills in as you read. A half filled circle indicates you are half way through the book, a solid circle indicates the book is 100% read.

3. I might have a line on a used prs-600. this Registering/Authorizing of the device that needs to be done - what is this? Will I have any problem if the device is used and thus registered to someone else?

Think that is it for now.

Thanks.

:help: Last night before I went to bed, I plugged my Sony PRS 300 into my computer to charge. I forgot that I had not yet loaded it onto this laptop, but I don't know if that's the problem or not. Anyway...when I woke up this morning, I went to unplug it, and the screen said "Reader Opening book...". Now it is stuck there. I have tried to turn it off...no luck. I have tried hitting the reset button...no luck. I have pushed every button on the thing, and nothing works. I have considered just letting it sit there until the battery runs out, but who knows when that will be. Has anyone run into this or know how to fix the problem?

Good morning

Im looking for a cheap ebook reader to read, among other things, pdfs.
In the pdf-files are no graphs or such things its only text.

I prefer the prs-300 because its cheap, has a good display and its without options i dont need.
But i would also buy the prs-600 if the prs-300 is bad in handling pdf-files because of the display or the processor.

I read also a lot about converting the pdf-files but not with the desired result.
Is it a problem to convert a pdf-file for the reader if the pdf-file consists only of text?

Is the prs-300 the right device for me?

Thx for help!

Organizing Notes:

Looking for a way to categorize notes on the PRS600. Some ability to group notes through the use of folders, categories or labels would be nice.

The native handwriting application doesn't have this functionality.

It would make the PRS600 incredibly more useful if someone could hack one up to do so. :bulb2:

I am considering selling my mint condition 600 for the 900, but concerned it might be too big. (Not crazy about selling the 600 at a discount either.)

Could someone post the measurements of the Case Logic case that comes with the 900, including the thickness? I have not been able to find its dimensions online yet.

Has anyone bought the 600 and the 900 and preferred the 600 after all?

Is the 900's contrast noticeably better as some report?

:thanks:

PRS-600 Pages load twice - but only using the buttons

It's happened before, but I didn't pay too much attention. Now lately, it happened again with two different books: Towards the middle of the book, every time I push the next page button, the next page loads twice. I mean it loads once, as expected, I have time to read the first word or two, and then it flashes again and reloads.

Now, I have learned a few things about the structure of epubs lately, so I checked these two books where this happened. Both had fairly large html files in them, more than 200kb each, and the double loading happened towards the end of each file. I'm not sure if it is really relevant, to be honest. Has anyone else noticed anything like this?

What is even more weird is that when I go to the next page by swiping with my finger, the annoying double-flashing doesn't happen. It only happens when I use the buttons. No idea how to explain this either.

Oh, and when I go to a previous page, and then to the next again, in other words when I go to a page previously loaded, it only loads once, normally.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Not having received any drivers with the package I downloaded all software and managed to synch one book out of My Books folder and that was it - should I wipe the whole thing & start over? I hope I have given enough info in my frustration! Thanks.

3. Does anyone have experience with linking Sony PRS-900 to the MacBook OS X Snow Leopard?

Thanks a lot!

Copying Files Directly to the SD Card?

Is there a specific place or folder on a SD Card that I’m supposed to copy files I want to read to on the Sony PRS-600?

I’m having difficulties that whenever I try to just copy a file directly over from a Mac onto a card without using the Sony software, it just won’t open on the reader. I get a ‘Protected Page’ error. And oddly the file shows up in the library on the reader with an underscore at the start of its title.

e.g. _Myfile.pdf

I know I can use Sony software to copy to the card, and that appears to work. But it would be more convenient when I just want to copy a file onto my reader for commuting etc, to be able to do it directly, and I thought this was possible?

Buy after reformatting my card several times on the reader, and resetting, I’m still not having any joy.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Many thanks

My Love-Hate relationship with my Sony PRS-600

I’ve owned a Sony PRS-600 for a few months now, and still can’t make up my mind if I love it or hate it…

I use it mainly for reading articles for research, and general interest, and some of the classics that are available free. The concept is brilliant, a small little device that I can pick up at any time and delve into a range of subjects and reading material as required. And in this regard the convenience and flexibility of having a nice library of books and reading material with me, especially when I working away or travelling for a few days is brilliant, and has definitely made me read more material.

However… the niggles. It’s well documented the Sony Software is not the best, and as a Mac user, I’ve had all the bad experiences of the software temporarily not working at all, and having to dig around on these forums to find the solution to delete all the hidden files and start afresh. – Should it really be that hard? In fact if it were not for this site, I think I would have returned the unit in the first 10 days, after I first experienced the problems.

Likewise, thank goodness for Calibre – I think Sony should be paying that fine gentleman for creating a piece of software that is usable with their product, which gives users the opportunity to not have to battle with their own effort. – again, I wouldn’t have found out about that solution were it not for this site. And again would have probably given up struggling with the Sony software, had I had to fend for myself alone.

e-Ink, Hmm, the jury is still out on this one as far as I’m concerned. I love its clarity, the fact I can use it outdoors, and the battery life. However, indoors, especially of an evening, it can be struggle in a poorly lit room. Worse than real paper, and when I compare with something like my iPhone to check an email or something, it’s like looking at a faded out LCD screen from a 90’s PDA. Maybe a reading light will solve that problem.

But is e-ink really that good? and will it survive long term? On my Sony I’ve noticed a very tiny bit of ‘ghosting’, where for a page turn immediately following using with a lot of ink, such as the home screen, I can see a very fine impression of the previous page. Looking through the posts on here I see that this is an inherent feature of e-Ink displays.

I really wonder what is going to happen when devices such as the iPad become available. Now not wanting to spark off an Apple vs haters debate, but will Joe Public really be turned on by a slow faded B/W display with cranky software, over a device that just works (based on experience with iPods, and iPhone etc), and has a rich display that is more versatile to show many different media?

e-Ink appears to have its fans, but not always does the higher quality product win through in the marketplace. ….Betamax? and surely in 2010, we should be listening to high resolution Super Audio CDs, rather than inferior quality MP3’s? But the marketplace likes convenience it seems.

The Sony PRS has some good potential, but has been let down by awful software, and has irritating things such as non-persistent page zooming, so I really think they need to improve their game to keep in the top flight.

I think for me, there that been several occasions along the line where I would normally have given up with the product, but only through my persistence to want the convenience of the books on the go, which I love, have I been able to cope with some of the struggles in using the technology.

I wonder how much my Sony will get used when I get my hands on an iPad? If there were a 6” iPad, then the answer would be easy. But possibly whilst the 9.7” iPad will be too big for me to take and use in all places, it will still have a use in being a compact and convenient way to read more books, which, when not struggling with the software, has been something I can say the Sony has achieved for me.

PRS-900 works abroad?

Folks,

I'm on the verge of getting an PRS-900. Initially was going after the 600 but after seeing reviews it appears the the PRS-900 is certainly better and I think the larger screen is just what I need.
I have two main requirements:
1. Good pdf support
2. Ability to highlight (and possibly make notes).

#2 I guess leaves me with only 2 options: Kindle or Sony. But since kindle has no touch screen, I believe I'll be more comfortable with the sony.

I'm never likely to connect to a book store as I'll be predominantly viewing pdfs only (commpany annual reports etc...).

Having said that, there are a few thing in the back of my mind that I want to confirm before I buy:
Does the PRS-900 work in other countries? (I suppose the SIM will be locked to the US but I'm not intrested in the 3G/book store... just want to make sure its not like mobile phones which will refuse to run anything unless the SIM card is inserted). All that I want to do is connect to a PC running linux, transfer pdfs and read. Don't have a sony ebook store account or anything.. will the device work fine for this sort of setup?

Thanks!
