*Hardcover* Price: *$15.09* <http://www.amazon.com/Audacity-Win-Lessons-Historic-Victory/dp/0670021334>

So I decided to check out the Kindle edition:

Why does the Kindle edition cost 28¢ more than the Hardcover? Does it cost that much more for the warehouse space to house ebooks? Or are they trying to compete with Barnes and Noble ebook prices?

Books Particularly Well-Formatted for Kindle

Is there a list for well-formatted Kindle books? Why should we focus on bad format jobs, if there isn't one?

I just bought a book which seems to be a MASTERPIECE of Kindle formatting!

I have not read thousands of Kindle books, so there may be others, feel free to add them to this thread.

The book I bought is

Linux Command Line and Shell Scripting Bible,

by Richard Blum, published by Wiley Publishing in 2008.

The fonts are far clearer, bolds bolder, and italics italicker than in any Kindle book I've seen. The book is broken up with little photo-images that look fantastic. This goes nicely with the quality of the writing; this seems to me to be a superb book.

The catch is that this is more expensive than the $9.99 that I try to hold my ebooks to. But I guess I am willing to go beyond that point when a publisher has gone beyond the call of duty in formatting.

Hi everybody longtime lurker, first time poster.

Just noticed something interesting while searching the Australian catalog of the kindle book store.

All the Jim Butchers books that are available have "(epub)" next to them, for example "Captain's Fury (epub) (Kindle Edition)".

Is it a mistake or is Amazon gonna start changing to epub in the near future.

edit: i don't have a kindle so can't purchase any of the books to check if they are in the epub format.

Portability of Kindle content across devices

I apologize in advance if this is a simple question. I recently purchased an Ipod Touch and have installed the Kindle Reader application. And now it has been announced that the Kindle reader software will be available for PCs (I have a netbook).

Can I purchase and download books now for my Ipod Touch and then, when, the PC application becomes available, read them on my netbook?

My understanding is that I register my Ipod Touch as my first device. Then later I could re-download the same book to my netbook as long as it is registered as my second device. Is this correct?

Searching through the forums, there appeared to be a limit of 6 devices. Is this simultaneous or lifetime? So after I have cycled through 6 devices, will I know longer be able to read the Kindle content?

These questions are important to me as there are some books I would only buy (e.g., travel guidebooks) if I can read them on both my Ipod and my PC but there is no way I would purchase them twice.

All of my accounts are registered in the USA and I am a USA resident, but I travel overseas 9 months per year and virtually all of my downloads would be outside of the USA (if that matters).

Thanks!
Travis

One major downside with the kindle and ereaders in general. Some sci-fi books have a glossary in the back that has certain terms basically made up for the book (dune, anthem). It is a pain in the ass to flip back there with the kindle. I wish they made a way to load the glossary of the book into the kindles built in dictionary. Or am I doing something wrong and there is a way?

Did have a Sony, Now have a kindle.

The things im hopeful for are more British content or access to titles.

Excuse my reading tastes.
But Dan Brown The Lost Symbol, IS available on Kindle but NOT to UK customers?
But Dan Brown The Lost Symbol is available on Waterstones for the sony ebook?
Similarly with Lee Childs and Scott Mariani books.

I appreciate it is early days and this i why I'm hopeful of what Amazon CEO stated
"Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO, Amazon.com, said the company is currently working on the problems and will be solving them soon. "In the future, we plan to introduce a UK-centric Kindle experience, enabling you to purchase Kindle and Kindle books in sterling from our Amazon.co.uk site," Bezos said during its launch."

Fingers crossed

English Thesaurus in the dictionary format

*James C. Fernald, English Synonyms and Antonyms*: with notes on the correct use of prepositions

A Practical and Invaluable Guide to Clear and Precise Diction for Writers, Speakers, Students, Business Persons and Professionals

You can purchase this dictionary for the Kindle at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002TG4NYC. The easy way to find it on your Kindle is to search for the word "osnova" in the Kindle store.

Right after the KJV Bible (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59871), I published on Amazon a thesaurus dictionary by James Fernald. I've been working on this text (converting to the electronic form, proofreading, revising, updating) on and off for about two years now. It's in the Kindle dictionary format and works quite well on my Kindle.

If you do not want to pay for this book, you can download a different version (not mine) from the Gutenberg project for free. The other copy is the exact copy of the paper one; it is not in a dictionary format. Mine is based on a much more recent edition of Fernald's. It is also revised, updated, and specifically adapted to be used as a dictionary on the Kindle.

Fernald’s acclaimed dictionary of synonyms and antonyms provides detailed articles discriminating the shades in meaning and usage between synonyms. Now, for the first time, it is available in the Kindle electronic dictionary format with an integrated index and excellent navigation – just type in a word to see the list of available articles or select a letter in the table of contents to read it as a regular book. See the screenshots for an illustration.

Based on the 28th edition published by Funk & Wagnalls Company in 1914; significantly revised, updated, and adapted for the electronic use by OSNOVA in 2009.

A quick note: at this time, I do not guarantee that all features will work on Kindle 1 because I do not have access to it.

Please do not use the sample generated automatically by Amazon (it cripples most of the features of the dictionary). If you need a sample download it right here.

What others have said about Ferndald’s work:
* "The work is likely to prove of great value to all writers."—Washington Evening Star.
* "The book will receive high appreciation from thoughtful students who seek the most practical help."—Grand Rapids Herald.

James C. Fernald, English Synonyms and Antonyms: with notes on the correct use of prepositions

Right after the KJV Bible, I published on Amazon a thesaurus dictionary by James Fernald.

The best Bible for your Kindle

*Holy Bible – King James Version – KJV (Direct Verse Jump, best navigation, searchable) by God-inspired*

*A short story*:

You can purchase the most useful electronic Bible currently available for the Kindle at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002TG4P8Q.

The easy way to find it on your Kindle is to search for the word "osnova" in the Kindle store.

Please do not use the sample generated automatically by Amazon (it cripples most of the features of the book). If you need a sample download it right here. To learn how to use all of the features, please read the text below.

A quick note: at this time, I do not guarantee that all features will work on Kindle 1 because I do not have access to it.

*A longer tale*:

After looking at almost all versions of the Bible available for the Kindle, I was not satisfied with any of them. I am not just a casual reader of the Bible (when you pick up reading right where you left off the previous time). I need to be able to turn to a specific verse anywhere in the Bible at a moment's notice while studying a specific passage, reading a theological book or listening to a sermon. As a result, even the versions with the hyperlinked tables of contents were not sufficient for me. I have come up with the Direct Verse Jump technique, which allows you in a couple of clicks’ worth of seconds to open any verse in the Bible.

Moreover, almost all versions that I could find do not preserve the formatting and delete some of the text that I find in my paper copy of the Bible (for example, italics, small caps for "LORD", the headings of many Psalms, or the Hebrew letter names in Psalm 119, KJV notes at the end of some of the Paul's epistles). So, I have decided to make another Kindle version of the Authorized Version to correct all of these issues. It has been a long haul, but now I am ready to share this version with you.

*Features of this Kindle KJV Bible, which has the same text as your paper copy:*

* Direct Verse Jump, a revolutionary new method to open the exact verse you need in seconds (see more information below)
* two other ways to navigate between books and chapters: (i) using a hyperlinked table of contents; and (ii) pressing the joystick right or left to move between books of the Bible. Once you learn all of the three navigation methods (in addition to the typical page-flipping), you will be able to open any verse in your Kindle Bible as fast as (or even faster than) in your paper copy.
* correctly formatted (i.e., preserving the formatting of the original KJV – italics, small caps in LORD, etc.)
* includes original KJV translators’ notes (your paper copy may have omitted them; all you need is to click on the hyperlinked dagger and when finished with the note to press “Back”)
* original text, notes, book titles carefully preserved (e.g., see the notes at the end of the Paul's epistles, which are found in the original KJV or titles of the psalms)
* it is easy to determine where you are in the Bible (each chapter gives you the name of the book)
* Jesus’ words are in bold
* as any Kindle book, the KJV Bible is searchable; however, when you first install the file _please wait for the Kindle to index the whole Bible_! The file is large and it takes a long time to index. For this reason, the DVJ navigation method will be available only after the book has been indexed.

*Direct Verse Jump, a new navigation method using the search functionality*:
In this version, all you need to do is type an abbreviated book name, then a period, then a chapter number, a period again, and then a verse number and press the “find” twice. That’s it! You do not need to wait for the Kindle to display the search results. You will be looking at that particular verse in seconds. If you just need to open the first verse of any chapter then the verse number is not necessary. Do not forget periods and use only the abbreviations that are listed below.

For example, if you wish to select chapter 3 of Genesis, you would:

1. type the standard abbreviation for Genesis (see below), then period, and finally number "3"; in other words: ge.3
2. click “find” twice and you are there.

For John 3:16, you type jn.3.16 and double click “find”.

Note that you should put the chapter number even for books that have only one chapter. For example, Epistle of Jude verse 5 would translate to jud.1.5 and a double click on “find.”

Suggestions for improvement are welcome.
