Updating US Kindle for International downloading?

Hello! Hey, I spent the outrageous amount of almost $500 on my Kindle DX thinking I could download books from anywhere in the world.... WRONG!! Now I see .... just a few months after getting mine... they release this International Kindle! I work all over the world and was soooo excited to think I could get books where-ever I needed!

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to update my Kindle DX with the International whispernet capability???

HELP!! I feel like I was ripped off .... BIG TIME! Especially seeing the price drop (with the added world access)..... GEEZ!

Thanks!

More K1 Battery Problems

This is strange. The best thing about the Kindle is the long battery life.

But it is a K1 and so when the battery indicator started to show drainage with normal use, I bought a new battery. I plugged it in overnight and it works fine.

Except the meter still shows drainage. I have not gotten through today's New York Times and the meter shows me at about 80%. How can that be? I have not run the battery flat with normal use, but I have my annual transAtlantic commute coming up and want to be able to read for the whole 12 hours.

Darn odd.

Large PDF ebook reader, should I wait or should I go for kindle dx ?

Hey guys,

I am a fan of ebook, I have discarded paper books for a year now.

I have owned a bebook (which fell and broke, although it was firmly set in its padded leather cover), so I got a Cybook Gen3 to replace it. I use it every day while commuting to work.

I also have an iliad book edition (so no wifi).

Primary use, read books (any format, anyway calibre will rule them all) that I get on the web.

Secondary use, read large size pdf (magazines or Role Playing Games).

I do not care about wifi, and I do not care about touchscreen (I never use it on my iliad, but you cannot get an iliad without a touchscreen anyway). The DX would mostly be used at home. I have also no interest in amazon online purchase services.

I have checked what is available now (the kindle dx) and what should be available in the near future (hanlin v9, QUE reader/plastik logic, sony daily edition and iliad 800).

The later two are of no interest to me. Sony looks too small and I am not that convinced by the Iliad...

So living in Switzerland, (no way to get the dx from amazon, since they do not deliver it), I found an online shop that can send it to me for about 577$ .
I will have to add more or less 7.6% tax + various customs tax (total 10-15%). So let's say I can get the kindle for 700$ (cheaper than what I paid for the iliad by the way).

Is it worth it for my planned use ?
Should I wait for something else ?

I have concerns about DX issues (mostly that the screen is fragile, and the rotating screen too sensitive). I am not bothered by the lacking of comprehensive sorting for books, I upload them one by one anyway...

What do you think ?

I know that a lot of new reader should arrive early in 2010, but most of them have touchscreen, for which I have not interest at all, and should the DX fit the bill, why wait ? Unless a price cut can be foreseen (due to probable heavy competition).

Any feedback is appreciated !

Cheers,
Ricou

Kindle 1 selling for outrageous prices on eBay

I've been waiting for a couple of weeks for Amazon to restock the $149 Refurbished Kindle 1.

Getting a bit tired of all this waiting, I figured that maybe I could get a used one at a cheaper price through eBay.

Imagine my surprise to see that they have been sold over the last 2 weeks at an average price of around $180!

I can see a single item that was sold for $100 + $8 shipping, and the next cheapest item was sold for $125 + $12.51 shipping. The rest of more than a hundred used Kindle 1's that have been sold over the last 2 weeks were actually sold more than $150!

In fact, I can see at least a dozen cases where it sold for more than $219, which is how much it costs to buy a refurbished Kindle 2 from Amazon.

Considering that Amazon had sold their refurbished Kindle 1 for $149 with free shipping (and would most probably do so again once restocked), I simply don't understand why people would pay such outrageous prices for a used one.

Is this simply a good example of how eBay sellers trick their buyers into paying more than they should?
Or do these buyers know something that I don't?

:chinscratch:

P.S Hmm... looks like the refurbished Kindle 2's have sold out too. Maybe this is what's driving the prices up?

Now what ?

Is there a chance that the Kindle 2 I bought last year in the US could use the network readilyor does it need to be converted to international or do I have to re-register it ??

I ask because I do use the wireless feature when I'm in the US already, which is 5 to 6 times a year. I don't mind buying my ebooks from Amazon and then downloading them to my K2, but it would sure be nice to be able to get some of the subscriptions going... By the way, I looked quickly and not all seem available... why is that ?

Any insight will be appreciated. Thanks !

Hi,

I have a Kindle 2 and it is registered to my Amazon account. My husband just received one as a gift and I wanted him to register it to my account so we could share books. In his excitement though he forgot and registered it to his own account.

I know we can de-register it and re-register it to my account but am I correct in thinking that if we do that we will not be able to access the three books he has already purchased on his account?

I am THRILLED with Amazon Customer Service.

Okay, so my story is not quite the 'Customer Service screwed me over' sad-sob story. I don't care.

I've been looking to 'upgrade' from my Cybooks for some time now. Why? Because the promised firmware updates are over one year past due and there's no real sign that the delivery *WON'T* slip to two or more years late.

I've been kind of intrigued with the Nook, but I have so much invested in mobi/prc format that I really thought I'd rather have a Kindle.

Naturally, if I were going to buy new, I'd buy straight from Amazon, but I'm a veteran of eBay and I've been keeping my eyes open for a decent used K2. Two weeks ago, to my surprise, one was listed with a broken screen. So I bid - and ended up getting it for $38!

Now I assumed that it was out-of-warranty and that I'd be shelling out for a replacement screen. That was not the case! It turned out that there were four months left on the original warranty according to Customer Service when I called them yesterday. Today, my FREE replacement arrived!

That's right, I now have a working K2 for a total investment of $38!

Amazon Customer Service, I LUV YA! :D :D :D
