Bookeen have released a new version of the Gen3, the "CyBook Gold". Memory is up from 512MB to 1GB, the screen supports 8 grey-scaled rather than 4, and it has the long-awaited ePub firmware.

See here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=664130#post664130) for more information.

Hopefully this indicates that the new firmware is now "officially" finished...

Hi,

I discovered this community some weeks ago when I tried to decide wich reader I should buy. I finally decided to go with the nice little Opus. I love it.

But…

Lots of books I would like to read don't exist in epub/suitable format, but I foolishly thought I would be easy to convert them…

So yesterday I bought a book in prc format and I am stuck, because I have to remove the DRM (it's legal here for personal use) before making the format conversion.

I try to use the python script mobidedrm0.5, but I don't know how to find the Opus PID…

How can I find it?

Please excuse my english, and thanks in advance for your time and your help

Last night I noticed a "spot" on the screen of my Opus. At first I thought it was just a speck of something and tried cleaning the screen. Upon closer examination it's part of the screen itself and looks like some of the little eInk microcapsules (http://www.eink.com/technology/howitworks.html) have burst or something. Something that would give a similar result to dead/stuck pixels. Anyone seen anything like that come up with an eInk screen?

(sorry for the poor image, it's just a quicky with my scanner)

I guess I'll email Bookeen support although I'm not hopeful of getting much help.

Has anyone had any problems with the Opus reading ePubs with "embedded" fonts? I've got an ePub that has the font Charis SIL "embedded" in it and every time I try and open it the Opus reboots. The file size, due to the fonts, is just over 2MB so it's a decent size file for an ebook, but not overly huge.

The file works fine in ADE so I'm trying to figure out if it's that it has fonts in it or something else that's giving the Opus fits.

Opus Fonts directory for Calibre -> External CSS

For those interesting in epub Fonts usage, the public Fonts directory of Cybook Opus is in fact /mnt/fat/Fonts/. The internal Fonts folder is "/mnt/app/res/fonts". You can find them in the system/.fonts-cache-1 text file.

So after a lot of reading and testing I successfully used the Liberation fonts (available in Calibre) in my epub files. Most importantly, I was even able to embed these fonts in the epub files so ADE could show Cyrillic letters instead of ???. You can read this thread if you need a portable epub file with embedded fonts: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61587

However, if you want to use the Liberation fonts only on your device, first copy all fonts from "C:\Program Files\Calibre2\resources\fonts\liberation" to your Cybook Opus Fonts folder. Then edit the stylesheet.css file (or enter the following text at Calibre -> Look & Feel -> External CSS field):
----------------
stylesheet.css - insert the following text after the first line
----------------
@font-face {
font-style: italic;
font-family: 'Liberation', serif, sans-serif;
font-weight: normal;
src: url(res:///mnt/fat/Fonts/LiberationSerif-Italic.ttf);
}
@font-face {
font-style: normal;
font-family: 'Liberation', serif, sans-serif;
font-weight: normal;
src: url(res:///mnt/fat/Fonts/LiberationSerif-Regular.ttf);

Multiple Cybook Gen3 Problems

Hi,

I bought my cybook a few months ago, and have always had a problem with it freezing-- usually I have to reset it at least once a session, sometimes multiple times.

Now, my cybook has developed a problem where when I'm trying to add a bookmark, it occasionally will show a small box and an arrow in the upper left hand corner instead of adding the bookmark. At the same time it does this, it will freeze. After resetting following this bookmark issue, it seems to delete recently added books.

Today, I discovered that any books I re-added no longer display a cover image in the library view. I actually deleted and then re-added my whole library, hoping this would fix the image problem (what I was thinking I don't know, because of course, it didn't work). After re-adding my whole library, I've now discovered that not only aren't cover images displaying in the library, I can now no longer add bookmarks. WHAT IS GOING ON????????

I've written to Bookeen a couple of times, and am still waiting for a reply. I've heard that they can take forever, so I'm hoping someone here will have a suggestion. Do I need to restore the device to factory settings? If so, how do I do that? Or, is there something else I can do?

Additional info: I don't have an SD card. Version ARM 920T (400 MHz); Boo Reader 1.4 (build 923); Mobipocket reader 6.0 (build 70).

Thanks for any help you can give!

Have the Opus about a month now and in general I like it. It does keep hanging on me in the middle of a book and having to take the back cover off to reset every time is annoying, but hey, I'll live with it.

Up until this evening it was fine and I've bought & transferred numerous books with no problems. Just bought 4 books today from BOB - 2 epub & 2 ade. Downloaded & transferred in the usual way via ADE. It won't open these 4 books, nor any books I've previously purchased. Just get 'Error while opening this document' message. It will however open any of the books that came with it. Can't figure it out.

Deleted all the files and replaced with copy of originals that I'd made when I bought it first (Learned my lesson with the Gen3!), but this hasn't solved it. Still have same problem.

Any ideas???

Thanks.

Have the Opus about a month now and in general I like it. It does keep hanging on me in the middle of a book and having to take the back cover off to reset every time is annoying, but hey, I'll live with it.

Hmm, I can't think of a good title for this thread...

The general idea of this is to pinpoint what it is that you like or dislike about your device/bookeen...especially as there sure seems to be a rather negative view of bookeen on the forums...

*FIRSTLY~* let's not let this get out of hand...try and keep the silly arguments for elsewhere, I'd like this thread to simply be what you like about the device, do you like the hardware and the device yourself? Is it the software that you dislike? Is it a case that you love the hardware, don't mind the software/firmware but simply hate bookeen's service..

If there, is something that annoys you about the cybook/firmware/bookeen...explain in detail why it's such a pain for you, maybe that way others may be able to understand why you feel this way

After all...in the end, maybe we can all hold hands in a circle and dance happily, huh? \^^/

I'd also really like to see what people used to use before e-readers or before the cybook, so that maybe people can remember how convenient these devices are

by now, people probably already think i'm insane, and love bookeen, well, i'm not...So my thoughts are below, i'd love for people to give an in depth posts about these things..

*What I love about the device :*

_The hardware, the size and the weight_
...Below i'll attach an image showing why, before getting the cybook, i used to read on a 15.4" laptop...now that's pretty big and heavy...one day I got my Dell XPS M1210, which to me was a blessing, for around 6 months i used it to read everyday on the bus with an extended battery and cdisplay (the best image viewer EVER). Now there's a comparison image here with everything for me, Including a DVD and a standard volume of manga...Now I read around 5 volumes on average a day...which can be quite a pain....espcially if I have to carry them around, also the M1210 is heavy
*At least now i have a much lighter load*

To be fair, I love the device itself, considering it's not really made by bookeen and is really made by netronix, I love those guys for the nice design...It's not full of too many features as well..

*
THINGS I HATE*

Ah, To read anything on the cybook, I have to start out with an annoying conversion process, sometimes renaming every image...Converting them all to RGB, resizing and finally making a PDF of them (just so it'll save my position)
now with my laptop, I can just add a .zip/.rar or even just a directory, read and continue reading when I restart easily...

Navigation, it's nice, but if i have many series, I have to wait for each page to load and make thumbnails, if I have multiple series'...then i have to move past them all to get to the other..
Next firmware update I hear has folder view, so...looking forward to it...

*things that don't bother me*

E-book format support
waiting time for new firmware

It'd be nice if we could get everyone's opinions of their devices and find out just what it is that makes some people dislike bookeen/the cybook so much...

EDIT : I also know that there's a similar thread for the cybook gen3, But i'd really love this to be a thread for both, and I'd like to provoke a little more thought into why you feel this way, thank-you for having me !
