I'm new to this forum and I just got a Sony eReader PRS-500.

Problem:
Somehow I got my eReader in a state where the 'USB Connected' dialog is up. I can't restart it and when I plug the USB back and eject the device, it fails to boot.

Software installed:
Initially: Sony Connect Reader and then upgraded to the new eBook Library reader. The Sony Connect Reader software did attempt to update the firmware and I'm not sure if this is worked or not.

I tried the hard reset instructions listed at: http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Sony...der#Hard_Reset
But this fails too. I never get to the point where it asks me for the Reset All option. Instead, the USB icon appears and I'm stuck.

I am however able to see the device in the eBook Library software. It has the 3 books I've copied over listed. I'm able to remove some of the sample books and add news ones.

I just can't get the device to get out of the current state.

Can anyone help me?

When I use the usb cable to connect it to my mac it doesn't come up as a drive. When I use the usb cable to connect it to the windows computer (which I hardly ever use) it shows up in the ebook software but not as a drive on the computer (that I can tell). I really just want to snag the files off the reader and store them somewhere, but I can't tell how to do that. I was trying to avoid using the ebook software. If I have to use it -- how can I tell where the software stores the files so I can put them somewhere safe? And how do I get the files from the reader into the ebook software? My windows computer seems to have lost the original book files but still knows the titles and stuff. I have been lurking around this forum for ages but only joined today as I have a problem.

My Sony PRS 505 froze on me today, I tried doing a soft rest but it also froze, so when I got home from work I found the instructions for a hard reset, which I am trying to do now.

My 505 is currently connected to the PC. I have got past the 'Reset All' screen, and the reader appears to have done that, and has turned on and off. Now I have the USB connected icon, the black arrow in the centre of the screen, and the red charging light showing, so what do I do now?

I don't use the Sony Software or buy any books from them, most of my books are fanfiction, which is all word documents and I use Calibre for everything, so do I just disconnect and then connect to Calibre now and reload all my documents?

Its been a bad day....... I use my ebook daily, its only 3 months old and something happened this morning when I conected to Calibre, the book wasn't recognised by Calibre, even though the device was recognised by the USB connection, and even though I did a proper disconect it froze in the on position.

I am covered under the warrently and John Lewis have already offered me a replacement or refund, but they only have the 300 or 600 now and I don't want either of them, the 300 is too small, and I just don't like the touch screen 600/700. I just want a working 505.

I searced on google and the cheapest place to get a 505 is Argos and its £75 more than I paid John Lewis!

If anyone can help me get my one working I would be very grateful.

Any why oh why discontinue the 505? I didn't know until today and it baffles me why they would replace it with a smaller ebook.

I've been checking on the forums for information about the reader's battery life and I've found some information but haven't found clear answers to some of my questions.

I learned through the forums that to extend the reader's battery life you should fully shut down the reader if you are not going to be using it for a while. My own experience when using the player is that playing audio files rapidly drains the battery.

But I wasn't able to find clear answers to these questions:

• What effect (if any) does the format of the ebooks have on the reader's battery life?
• What effect does using a memory card have on the reader's battery life?

I just got a Sony PRS 505, and I'm having trouble transferring downloaded epub files to my reader.

I downloaded them (they're public domain google books) via the Sony ebookstore, and they show up in my library just fine, but when I try to transfer (dragging and dropping like the user guide says) them to my reader, they simply don't. There's no error message or anything, they just won't transfer. When I click on 'status' it shows "0 of 1 files transferred." The reader *is* authorized to my account, and I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but no matter what I do, it just doesn't work.

I am going to to do a clean install on the iMac from a new download of the eBook software.

and after I get my new iMac and do a clean install, do I need to register my 505 and / or eBook Library? If so - HOW???:blink:

I gather that I don't need ADE as it is built into the latest eBook Lib software.

All I want to be able to do is buy the odd epub book and get it onto my reader in the simplest way possible!

Rather than wait for however many weeks it would take the battery to run down on its own without any page turns - or, foolishly, just the 30 minutes it did take to turn off on its own - I decided to treat it like a computer or any other electronic device with this problem and proceeded to take it apart. (With the idea of disconnecting the battery altogether to force a reset.)

This didn't work (I couldn't take it apart enough to get to the battery - at least without any destructive method I could think of), and I ended up putting it back together again with it still locked. (To be followed about 10 minutes later by it finally shutting itself down.)

As a result of me having taken it apart, though, my volume button on the bottom is no longer "firm" like it used to be. Instead, it "flops" back and forth. It works, it's just doesn't have that "spring loaded" feel to it. I never listen to MP3s on my 505 so I really don't care about this at all. Except that it's always a very minor annoyance in the back of my head that I think of whenever I look at the bottom of my reader.

If anybody has any concrete idea what I did wrong, and how I can go back in and fix it, let me know. So...

I am using my PRS 505 since July 2008. I imported it from US and my guarantee is now expired.

I was using it during this year without any problems. It was runing on 1.0 firmware and with some minor customization. Few weeks ago it suddenly freezed during the startup but luckily yellow led was blinking (STARTING UP screen). After some recharging I was able to unbrick it. Firstly I thought that it was caused by flat battery (it happened to me few times before) and recharging will do the trick. But freezes came up again and again...

Few days ago i finally unbricked PRS and formatted internal memory, erased card, downloaded and upgraded to 1.1 firmware and used PRScustomizer. I thought that changing soft will fix all my problems but I was wrong... :( I fully charged my reader and started reading. After... maybe 15 pages it simply freezed. Switching the power button only makes that yellow LED lights on now (NO blinking).

I read many posts about soft/hard reset, unbricking reset (10 times), 2sec-10sec-3sec reset. When I connect to PC via USB nothing happens except charging. After hour red LED turns off and yellow lights on. After few hours it turns OFF and red lights on...

I even tried overnight charging via standalone charger with no result. Now I'm a bit confused and I don't know what to do...

I'd love some advice on getting my beloved reader back from an attempted flash with the UF 2.1. I've tried all the common fixes to revive the device. This is the sequence of events:

• Latest Sony FW on the prs-500
• Ran UF 2.1
• Press 5 - success
• Press 6 - failed (error while flashing partition)
• Power off\on - hard\soft reset - Stuck at "Starting up"
• Reset 10x - success
• Screen at "Updating Firmware now..."
• Full overnight charge
• Cannot trick updater into enabling "Update" button
• Screen still at "Updating Firmware now..."

I ran igor's ebook python script, but that did not help either. It did put the reader back to the frozen "Starting up" page, and a 10x reset got me back to the "updating firmware now" page.

I have searched for the original firmware without success. I no longer have the original installation disc to attempt a reinstall as someone pointed out in another thread.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It appears like a USB peripheric with the name "Sony Reader storage card".

I bought yesterday a 4GB memory stick. It appears exactly under the same name "Sony Reader storage card" which I find confusing.

This is inconvenient because I use a syncing program and I need to individualize the name of these cards before I make a backup mistake.

Is this a way just to do it? I would be happy to read for example:
- Sony Reader memory stick
- Sony Reader SD card.

Any tip welcome. :)To remove ebook library 3.0 and go back to 2.5
My system kept shutting down 3.0 when I tried to transfer books this is how the sony tech had me reinstall 2.5.

In the control panel unistall the ebook library 3.0

Then go to computer (be sure to be able to view hidden files, to do this click organize in the upper left corner, then folder and search options, then click view, then show hidden files and folders.)

Okay back to the instruction. Go to Computer and click drive C:
Click ProgramData
Delete the files Kinoma and Marlin

Go back to C:
Click Users
Click your Name
Click AppData
Click Local
Delete the files Kinoma and Sony Corporation

I don't know if this has been posted but for those who really can't get ebook library to work I hope this helps.
