Best Windows reader (and browser) for PDF and EPUB

Hi,

I just bought a bunch of pdf and epub ebooks. They open and read fine in Adobe Digital Editions. Problem is, I would need to be able to search given words in all the ebooks. As far as I can see, I can search words within the document which is open, but not in the other files which are in the same directory.

In Adobe Acrobat, you can search and find items in the document which is open, but also in all the pdf files of a given directory. Is there any reader which allows you to find words in all the pdf AND epub files of a directory?

Another option would be to convert the epub files to pdf and use Acrobat Reader. I tried Calibre, but the resulting pdf file was too small and weird (less pages than the original epub file). IS there any good tool to convert epub files to pdf?

thanks!

Australian readers - which device do you use?

I'm interested in knowing which e-reader devices are used in Australia...

I find Australia is so far behind in the 'e-reading' world.... You can't buy an e-reader from Harvey Norman, Dick Smith etc - some of the leading electronic stores... In fact, they don't even sell PDAs anymore, since the i-phone came in.

I've been reading books on my Palm Zire72 for at least 5 years, but I would like something new :o There's nothing wrong with my Palm, yet, and it has a backlit display, which is perfect for when I'm on night shifts (I'm a carer, and lights are off at night).. This device also has my calender, notes, memos etc on it...

Which device do you use and why?

Thanks

ADE leaves files behind after deleting eBooks?

I was searching for a particular eBook within the ADE folders today and found the following two folders:

*1. C:/Users/[Username]/Documents/My Digital Editions/Annotations*

The above folder contains a file (or multiple files) for every book that I've ever used (or maybe just imported) in ADE. I have since deleted many ePub and PDF books that I've opened with ADE and these files remain behind.

*2. C:/Users/[Username]/Documents/My Digital Editions/Thumbnails*

The above folder contains a thumbnail (or multiple thumbnails) of the book cover(s) for every book that I've ever used in ADE. I have since deleted many of these books, yet the thumbnails remain behind.

Does anyone know of any reason why I can't clean out these folders, or at the least remove duplicates, triplicates, etc....??

Thanks, Ken

(I'm also looking into duplicate (or more) thumbnails stored on the reader itself)

Sony ereader software will not launch

My first post - I'm really impressed with this community and have already made use of postings advising how to unfreeze my 505 and what might be causing it to freeze. Also was sent a couple of free books by a member to get me started, everyone here is so generous!

Lately I'm having problems launching the Sony ereader software I've used it OK before, haven't updated it or my operating system (Windows XP) but now it won't open. When I double click its icon, or try to launch it in other ways, the hourglass comes up, goes away again and nothing happens. No error messages, nothing. I haven't tried getting rid of it and reinstalling as I'm concerned that might affect my use of the 505 (would its authorisation become invalid?)

It's not critically important, as I've downloaded Calibre (wow!!!) so am using that for my day to day book management. However if I need the Sony software in the future I could be stuck.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening and what I could try?

Many thanks

I am looking for a replacement for my Palm TX, and ebook reading is a high priority. Currently I use PalmFiction and Read Them All - they both have the Read Them All scrolling where the text does not move, but is overwritten, line by line.
I have not been able to find any non-Palm reader software that implements this, so, is anyone aware of non-Palm ebook-reader software that can scroll like "Read Them All"?
:thanks:

Bounty for Linux ePub Reader Software

Let's face it, Linux dweebs. Our favorite OS has dreck for software readers.

FBReader is trying to be a swiss-army knife. Coolreader is beta at best. It drops off seriously after that to PG text-readers.

Would anyone consider pledging to a bounty to pay a programmer to make an ePub (and zipped HTML) reader? Not a Mobipocket-eReader-MicrosoftReader-PDF-Doc-RTF-EtcReader-all-in-one-wunderkammer?

Just a good, solid, ePub reader that has complete CSS support and per-book bookmarks. Decent library handling, with folders. Fullscreen rotation. Lightweight, with a good interface that works with touchscreens or keyboards. (any other features?)

It doesn't have to be from scratch. I'd say take a look at Calibre's reader, myself, and at FBreader's library interface. Dillo has a super-fast renderer, and they're working on CSS right now. (Actually a dillo-based reader would be awesome!)

I'd definitely throw $ at this. We'd need a good set of specs, and some ideas on how to find applicants, and a sense of what sort of money is reasonable.

Let's call it the MobileReader. :D

Hi,

I'm not sure this is a right forum to ask.

I have a number of ebooks purchased from eReader.com. I also have both eReader and B&N ereader on my iPhone. I believe that B&N will stop enhancing eReader app and concentrate on B&N ereader.

The problem is both apps seem to see eReader and B&N online stores as different ebook stores. So I don't know how I can fully switch my eReader books to B&N.

My question is how can I download my eReader ebooks into B&N eReader on my iPHone?

New ePub addon for Firefox

Hi there,

I just wanted to inform you about a new addon for Firefox with which you can read ePub-files. It is called "EPUBReader". I finished the addon last week and uploaded it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/45281.

Before I started the development, I checked if something similar exists. Of course I found OpenBerg, but OpenBerg seems not to support Firefox 3.*. I checked the source code of OpenBerg and decided to write the addon from scratch, because it's not so easy to understand the code somebody else has written.

I would be very happy, if you would try it and give me your feedback.

UPDATE:
I've just uploaded the new version 1.1.0.

Here is what I changed:

- Now it's possible to navigate through the ePub-file using navigation buttons at the bottom. This is the most important and most requested change . The navigation is available for all epub's loaded with version 1.1.0. So please reload epub's which you loaded with previous versions.

- In the navigationbar is now a link to every page in the ePub-file displayed. In previous versions sometimes missed a link.

- The navigationbar can now be toggled at the bottom, using the "+/-" link.

- The author of the ePub-file is now displayed if he is specified in the ePub-file. In previous versions he was sometimes not displayed even though specified in the file.

:thanks:

Hello,

anybody knows how to open an epub file with eReader in Windows Mobile?

I have created an EPUB file out of a PDF file using Calibre.

Now I would like to read it in my Windows Mobile phone with eReader, but it seems this software can only open books that are in a personal catalog on its web.

Am I missing something?

I see that B&N are now offering the eReader software with their own brand (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/ebooks/download-reader.asp?PID=28414&cds2Pid=29168&linkid=1458083), but only for iPhone/iPod, Blackberry, PC and Mac. Seems like the Windows version is effectively identical to the eReader - it even has exactly the same README file, referring to "for eReader v. 3.0.3 for Windows." Not surprisingly therefore, it reads my .pdb files OK.

I assume therefore that I can continue to use the Palm reader on my Centro, and that the eReader file format will live on...

I am not sure if this is the right venue to venture this question. Pls forgive if I made an error.

I have been using mobipocket reader for quite some time now in my pc, symbian phones as well as windows mobile phones. In PC I find it easy to change the background colour to any custom color of our choice but in phones I find it rather limited. I am a regular dark in a light background reader, and there are only a few backgrounds of my choice, such as white, silver and grey.

I was wondering if there was a way to edit the background colour to one of our choice. I prefer a dull cream color usually or even a light brown shade. But I see that such an option is missing. Is there anyway to tweak the custom files to bring this color into the list, maybe manually inputting the RGB values somewhere in the program files??

Kindly let me know, if any of you has any experience tweaking this thing.

Thanks and regards

I will be reinstalling the Sony eBook Library software when I upgrade to Win7 (assuming it works with Win 7?).

I was wondering if its possible to backup my collections and other configuration data? I have a bunch of collections and would hate to lose them. Thanks.

Hi all, i've just joined this site and wonder if anyone can give me some advice,

i've had my e reader for 10 months and i had to return it in september as after charging it the screen was frozen on "loading"

i received it back promptly but with a rather snotty letter telling me i had downloaded a corrupt file, at the time i hadn't downloaded any books at all!

i've now used it for 3 weeks and downloaded one book from the waterstones site and having just recharged it for the first time since i got it back it now has a frozen screen again, i can't turn it off either,

Waterstones aren't interested, Sony have referred me to sony solutions and they've just said send it back again.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? i'm worried that it will just keep doing this and i'll never be able to enjoy my reader .

thankyou
