Hi April Hare. I just read your reply to my rant. I have a question for you. Have you been able to get your 500 to show up on the latest library version. If you did, I would be very obliged if you could show me how I can do it. BTW I'm running the library on Vista and the 500 will not show up, whatever I try.
See you!

Sorry but for some reason I can't reply to your visitor message - so I'll reply here :)
I'm not running the latest version of the Sony Ebook Library software on XP yet -using 2.5.x (I guess I got nerves about upgrading..). The other machines I have here are either running 64 bit or are Mac; they are currently excluded from working with PRS-500 - unless you get the firmware upgrade, that is. Apparently the firmware upgrade also offers you EPUB support and breakfast.

I have a newly purchased 505. ( 1 week old) I used an 8gb SD card to put a couple of books on to try it out. I have been reading one book off the card for the past few days. This evening, no go. Card wouldn't show up. I have been shutting the reader down via the menu, rather than the slider switch. I re-formatted the card in my little Kodak camera, but I don't think I'll use it agin in the reader. I have a 1gb card in the reader now. Any ideas? Am I just unlucky? The book was a Project Gutenberg, so I just downloaded it again.:2thumbsup

Sweet, sweet success! :D
I made a ~30 minute phone call about 45.5 hours after the last phone call (I doubted whether I would receive a phone call within 48 hours for some reason).
Sony were great (couldn't quite make out the name of the person who spoke to me..) - he gave me a work order number and instructions on where to send my Reader in the US (Laredo, Texas, near the Mexico border) - all I need to do is pay the shipping there from Australia!
 Thanks Sony!
Now all I need to do is find the moral fortitude to entrust my Reader to the postman..
Let this be a lesson to all the naysayers out there who said people outside the US can't get their firmware updated by Sony USA!

My (new) Sony 505 back up has arrived.

Normally, I'm not loyal to a brand or particular device, but I love my Sony 505 so much, I wanted to be able to replace it with the exact same thing if it died.

When Sony stopped making them, I got a bit uneasy, especially when online shops started showing it "out of stock". I ended up going to eBay where their numbers are also dwindling. "shopintheusa" sent me one for $342.40AUD including freight. Since then "shopintheusa" have raised their prices, and have fewer Sony 505's for sale.

I was a bit hesitant about getting a back-up. It's hard to justify spending money to back up a gadget that's been working perfectly for two years.

I have heaps of electronic gear that has lasted yonks - my TV and VCR are over 12 years old, my I-River 40GB mp3 player is 5 years old. I've got a 5 year old notebook and tablet. I haven't any concern about these items. The only other back up I have is a hoard of 100watt incandescent light bulbs (no longer sold in Australia).

But, as soon as the parcel arrived this morning and I was holding that brand new Sony in my hands, I knew I had done the right thing getting it. Now I no longer fret about (old) Sony breaking. I can take it on buses and trains and trams and planes, and throw it around and not worry. Its brand new replacement is sitting safe in a cupboard at home, just waiting to take over.

Like they say in the commercials:

"Sony 505 - $342. Peace of mind - priceless."

I have seen a second hand 505 for £158. This is the cheapest I have seen after some searching. It has a cover, mains charger, CD of 100 books and a quickstart manual, but no USB cable or software/manual CDs. I'm not sure what this means or if it would be a problem not to have these.

Anyone think this is a good deal, or should I just pay the extra £40 for a brand new one?

Or the extra £60 for the 600?

Adobe ePub and the 505........

I recently bought two Adobe ePub books from Books on Board. They were new releases which I had advance-ordered (K.J Parker's 'Shadow' and 'Colours in the Steel' if anyone's interested!).
When I transferred them to my 505 the formatting was dreadful - the base font was so small I couldn't see it and when I increased it to something readable there were acres of white space and no justification.
I can't fault BoB's customer service - they were excellent and re-credited my account - but their explanation was interesting:

*"We have not received any replacement files from the distributor for these titles. The formating issue is caused by Adobe file construction standards that predate the Sony frmware upgrade allowing for support by the device. We have made the distributor aware of the issue and requested that they inform the publisher of these titles........"*

Since the books had only just been published I find it strange that the file construction predates the Sony upgrade. I am now deeply hesitant about buying any more Adobe ePub!

Has anyone else had similar problems?

If this has been answered somewhere please point me to it (I searched but got no results).

This has already happened to me twice, when I connect my 505 to the PC, Windows did notrecognize it at the first try so when I connect it again I find that all my Collections are gone! Along with Bookmarks and History.

I rely a lot on my Collection List since it keeps my books organized and much easier to navigate to. So my question is, is there some way to back up them?

Thanks!

I have rung Sony Style for a second time (note: calling toll-free US numbers via Skype is free, handy to know when you're ringing from Australia!) at about 4 PM American West Coast time.
I spoke to one Jonathon (I think that was his name) and he knew about the firmware upgrade offer. He was very clear the offer was only available within the US.
There was silence for a few moments after this.
I pleaded that I was aware that I was very far away and that I was aware that shipping costs were an issue and that I was willing to pay them, both to and from the US.
He was much more helpful after that :) He took my details, promised to have someone ring back in 24 hours, and later on 48 hours, and even gave me a case number. He said he was sure that they could assist me in my particular case :)
The ball is rolling, can't wait for Round 3 (please don't ring at 3 AM Australian Eastern Daylight Savings, Sony, I need my beauty sleep!)

Sony PRS 505 Hard Reset questions

Hi everyone

I have been lurking around this forum for ages but only joined today as I have a problem.

My Sony PRS 505 froze on me today, I tried doing a soft rest but it also froze, so when I got home from work I found the instructions for a hard reset, which I am trying to do now.

My 505 is currently connected to the PC. I have got past the 'Reset All' screen, and the reader appears to have done that, and has turned on and off. Now I have the USB connected icon, the black arrow in the centre of the screen, and the red charging light showing, so what do I do now?

I don't use the Sony Software or buy any books from them, most of my books are fanfiction, which is all word documents and I use Calibre for everything, so do I just disconnect and then connect to Calibre now and reload all my documents?

Its been a bad day....... I use my ebook daily, its only 3 months old and something happened this morning when I conected to Calibre, the book wasn't recognised by Calibre, even though the device was recognised by the USB connection, and even though I did a proper disconect it froze in the on position.

I am covered under the warrently and John Lewis have already offered me a replacement or refund, but they only have the 300 or 600 now and I don't want either of them, the 300 is too small, and I just don't like the touch screen 600/700. I just want a working 505.

I searced on google and the cheapest place to get a 505 is Argos and its £75 more than I paid John Lewis!

If anyone can help me get my one working I would be very grateful.

Any why oh why discontinue the 505? I didn't know until today and it baffles me why they would replace it with a smaller ebook.

Thank you for any help/advice you can give

Just bought the 505 for 139 at Target, should I be worried?

Posted this in probably the wrong forum so I thought I would try here...

I just bought the Sony 505 at Target for 139.00 That is a steal and I, myself, would be perfectly happy with it, but the problem is, it is not for me!

I convinced my sister's husband to buy it for her for Christmas. (I bought it, he is paying me back.) I know she has been wanting one (I have the pink 300) and this was 60 dollars cheaper.

Am I wrong? Is she going to have more headaches than it is worth? I would have bought it for myself, but now I am having buyers remorse about making someone else buy it, LOL. I just don't want them coming back and saying..."why did you recommend this one, we could have gotten the other one."

(though to be fair if it works fine and she has no problems, then she will never do that, I am the one that second guesses everything.)

I wanted to set it up for her and do the firmware update if there is one because she does not have the patience. I even have a few books I can download onto her device. I just have to register her device to my ebook library right?

Tell me if I did the right thing.

:thanks:

How will the sony upgrade affect non-English font customization?

I have a sony PRS500 with non-English fonts. I am thinking about upgrading the firmware, but concerned about whether it will lost the ability to read those non-English contents or not.

So, for the experts who know how the font customization program works: do you think the current font customization program will bring back that ability after the machine is touched by Sony?

Thanks:chinscratch:
