Just received a used 505 from ebay seller. I have a 600 and want to share the existing library.

I authorized the 505 to my existing Sony library.

However, when syncing to my library, the sync gets hung up. When I cancel the sync, the error message "This ebook cannot be transferred because the Reader is authorized to another user" comes up.

Any idea why this occurs any how do I fix?

It is interesting I can manually move the books to the reader.

How many actually use an SD card and how do you manage your books?

I haven't used my SD card in almost one year, relying only on the internal memory of my Sony 505.

I currently have only 151 books on my internal memory.

Recently, I started thinking maybe I should just cram a lot of books (about 200) onto the card - well, putting them in the Library first, and then have the Sony index everything, so that when (if) I change font sizes, then I won't be waiting. (But also, leave the 151 titles in the internal memory.)

By the way, I use the Sync feature on mine, which I understand many people choose not to use.

Okay, so shortly after I bought my 505 it locked up on me and I couldn't turn it off. Rather than wait for however many weeks it would take the battery to run down on its own without any page turns - or, foolishly, just the 30 minutes it did take to turn off on its own - I decided to treat it like a computer or any other electronic device with this problem and proceeded to take it apart. (With the idea of disconnecting the battery altogether to force a reset.)

This didn't work (I couldn't take it apart enough to get to the battery - at least without any destructive method I could think of), and I ended up putting it back together again with it still locked. (To be followed about 10 minutes later by it finally shutting itself down.)

As a result of me having taken it apart, though, my volume button on the bottom is no longer "firm" like it used to be. Instead, it "flops" back and forth. It works, it's just doesn't have that "spring loaded" feel to it. I never listen to MP3s on my 505 so I really don't care about this at all. Except that it's always a very minor annoyance in the back of my head that I think of whenever I look at the bottom of my reader.

If anybody has any concrete idea what I did wrong, and how I can go back in and fix it, let me know. (I did open it back up a 2nd time, but wasn't able to figure out what I'd messed up or or how to correct it.)

Battery Life Reading PDF vs. LRF/Epub

Hi,

Does anyone feel that they get shorter battery life while reading PDF's vs. LRF or Epub? I've had my 505 since May and I love it. I also have a Kindle 2 and a Pocket Pro but the Sony is my favorite. I generally read at least 2 hours per day and frequently more. I buy a lot of books from Fictionwise in the .lit format and convert to LRF in Calibre (I don't use their LRF because I like a certain amount of white space and I can control that if I convert).

Anyway, I do have a good many books in DRM free PDF format also and I've been reading a lot of those lately. I just don't think I'm getting as much out of a battery charge as when I'm reading the other formats. I use the AC charger overnight and a day or so later I am down to 3 bars on the battery. A day after that it's half drained. I do tend to enlarge the font more on the PDFs so I'm getting fewer words per page so that may account for some of it.

I also seem to have more reboots when I'm reading PDF than LRF. I don't really have anything stored in the main memory, everthing is on the Memory stick and SD card. I load everthing to the Sony using Calibre.

Has anyone else noticed this happening?

Thanks.

hey guys, i just got a prs500 and using it with a lexar sdhc 8GB sd card.
However, I have an issue that the ebook library won't recognize my sd card even if it is inserted into the reader.
The SD card alone works fine with my laptop. Anyone know what's the issue?

My firmware version is:1.0.03.07170.

At first, I thought it might be a format issue. But after I downloaded the panasonic sd card formatter software and format my sd card again, it still does not help. Does it mean I have to use an sd card smaller than 2GB?

Thanks guys.

PRS 505 - unusual freeze

Hello again,

My second thread here ane second hope to find any help... Luckily JeffElkins was able to help me first time. (THANKS again ;) )

So...

I am using my PRS 505 since July 2008. I imported it from US and my guarantee is now expired.

I was using it during this year without any problems. It was runing on 1.0 firmware and with some minor customization. Few weeks ago it suddenly freezed during the startup but luckily yellow led was blinking (STARTING UP screen). After some recharging I was able to unbrick it. Firstly I thought that it was caused by flat battery (it happened to me few times before) and recharging will do the trick. But freezes came up again and again...

Few days ago i finally unbricked PRS and formatted internal memory, erased card, downloaded and upgraded to 1.1 firmware and used PRScustomizer. I thought that changing soft will fix all my problems but I was wrong... :( I fully charged my reader and started reading. After... maybe 15 pages it simply freezed. Switching the power button only makes that yellow LED lights on now (*NO blinking*).

I read many posts about soft/hard reset, unbricking reset (10 times), 2sec-10sec-3sec reset. When I connect to PC via USB nothing happens except charging. After hour red LED turns off and yellow lights on. After few hours it turns OFF and red lights on...

I even tried overnight charging via standalone charger with no result. Now I'm a bit confused and I don't know what to do...

:help:

Sorry for my english. I assume it might be quite awkard.

Hi all! I'd love some advice on getting my beloved reader back from an attempted flash with the UF 2.1. I've tried all the common fixes to revive the device. This is the sequence of events:

* Latest Sony FW on the prs-500
* Ran UF 2.1
* Press 5 - success
* Press 6 - failed (error while flashing partition)
* Power off\on - hard\soft reset - Stuck at "Starting up"
* Reset 10x - success
* Screen at "Updating Firmware now..."
* Full overnight charge
* Cannot trick updater into enabling "Update" button
* Screen still at "Updating Firmware now..."

I ran igor's ebook python script, but that did not help either. It did put the reader back to the frozen "Starting up" page, and a 10x reset got me back to the "updating firmware now" page.

I have searched for the original firmware without success. I no longer have the original installation disc to attempt a reinstall as someone pointed out in another thread.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm getting annoyed with the typos found in purchased ebooks from Sony's store. Though I'm not sure who is responsible for the conversion, the publisher or the sellers, the quality is frequently very bad. If they are using OCR software to make the conversion, there still should be someone proof reading - if they are going to sell the books at bookstore prices.

How do I make my complaints known?

.. Have all you PRS500 users e-mailed Sony yet for details regarding the EPUB upgrade path?
It's important to do so, as Sony must also be reminded we are waiting for their EPUB support.. :)

---Quote---
There will be an EPUB related update path available soon for the PRS-500; if you are interested in learning when it's available, please send an email to feedback@ebookstore.sony.com with "500" in the subject line and Sony will drop you a line when the process is up and running.

My wife is a Reader-cide...

I was asked to expand a bit further on this post (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=644976&postcount=49)

My wife has executed 1 500 and 1 505 and is working on the slow torture of her 2nd 505.

*Wife demanded edit:*This tale of horror and woe has been three years in the making and is not something that just occurred recently.

The first 500 was done in with a guillotine like fashion when it dropped unnoticed from the pile of stuff she was getting out of the car into the door well. What damage may or may not have occurred from the drop itself, was rendered moot, when she slammed the car door close --- CRUNCH.

*Wife edit:*No, No, No, - I gently placed the 500 into the car door well while getting stuff out.

Her second Reader the 505 was thrown from a decent height onto the looming depths of concrete below, after slipping out of her purse.

Her third Reader was tossed from the plank (well a coffee table is close enough). Currently the shell is being held on with medical tape (my wife is very clear that this is medical not duct tape), but is otherwise functional.

*Wife edit:*Well actually it's been dropped two times now, both times it hit hard enough to eject the SD card, but it's still working, damnit...

On the more serious side, throughout all of this she remains very impressed with the build quality of the Sony Readers and especially the 505. For instance while the screen is cracked and the case very definitely bent from her first one hitting the concrete, I was still able to transfer files to and from the Reader afterwards.

We will be replacing her current 505 with mine when the time comes, and her greatest fear at this point is finding a suitable replacement for that one.

Hi all,

New to the forum, and really hoping Santa pulls through this Christmas with a PRS-505. My question is this - do you find the Sangria to be distracting when you are reading?

Thanks,
January

I have about 60 books on there now and have started adding anything else I wanted to memory cards...........but I am wondering if this is really necessary?
