Hi,
I was just wondering how long I can expect the battery to last on this Sony PRS-505. I hope it is longer than one year. I just got to thinking that is the how long my last MP3 player battery lasted.

How long has anyone had theirs? Over one year?

Hi, Reading some of the posts on the forum made me think better of just tucking my Sony Ebook into my pocketbook without any protection.

Until I come up with something fancier, this will work great!
I purchased a Case Logic netbook sleeve on clearance for $7

Image: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2441/3685013412_49f989b3c3_m.jpg

Then, I cut it in half. It will now protect both of our books.
I haven't decided if I'll even finish the edges in time...

I was wondering where to get the Windows XP drivers for the PRS500. I've lost the CD and have just bought a new computer. I can see on the site where to download the library software and the firmware update, but not the USB drivers.

Can someone tell me where to download it, or alternatively upload their copy of the USB driver to rapidshare or somewhere similar? Just plugging it in doesn't automatically install it, sadly...

Although, what I'd really love is an ISO of the original disc. If that's possible.

Thanks in advance,
Joel.

Sony nav-u car battery adapter for Reader

I was tagging along with my wife today at a local discount mall when I discovered that they had a Sony Store. I've been wanting to get a charger that will plug into the 5.2v port on the bottom of the Reader that is powered from a 12v source so I can recharge while in the motorhome using it's solar panels & house batteries. They didn't have one specifically for the 505 but they did have a XA-DC3, Sony nav-u Car Battery Adapter. It's output is 5.2v at 2000ma and it has the same plug as what is needed to fit the 505. The best thing about this deal is the price. Their regular price is $24.95 but they are currently on sale there at 50% off, so it cost me $12.50 plus tax. I would kind of guess that is a regular price at this discount mall Sony Store. Some day I'll have to go there just to look around when I have more time to spend- can't tell what all things that I can't do without that I'll find! This particular store is located at Marysville, Washington.

Probably sounds like such a simple question but I need help. Syncing is screwing up my bookmarks and I'd much rather drag and drop. But...the last two times I've tried to turn off sync, it erased all the books on my reader...ERRRRR Do I A: plug in reader and then turn off Sync or B: turn off Sync and then plug in my reader? OR C: Am I totally out to lunch and it's something different?

I really don't want to load them all up a third time.

Thanks

Another one for the blue camp

My 505 (blue) arrived yesterday. I'm very pleased with it. I already own an iRex iLiad v2. I must say that I love the instant on feature in the Sony. The Sony menu navigation is also much faster than that of the iLiad.
I purchased an iLiad due to being a Software Engineer and reading computer manuals in PDF format. I had read on here that the iLiad is better for PDFs. The iLiad has a larger screen and can therefore display a whole PDF page on the screen and be readable, but the print is still a bit small for comfortable reading unless I zoom in to remove the whitespace from the sides of the document, then it is better and easier to read. However, the iLiad does not reflow the text if I zoom in further, not out of the box anyway. I did try a 3rd party app that allows PDF reflow, but it is slightly 'clunky' to use since you must load the application and then search for the file. It takes a few minutes to get the document open if you have switched to another document in the mean time (which I do since I read novels as well as computer texts in PDF).
So, I have to say that I am very impressed with the way that the 505 handles PDFs and to be honest, I am not sure why everyone is complaining. It does a pretty good job considering the screen size and if I knew that it was this good then I may have just purchased the Sony straight up.

Anyway, both devices have good features and I plan on using them for different purposes now. I will use the 505 for reading novels and for when I want to travel 'light' and I will use the iLiad for reading computer texts in PDF and CHM formats.

I have to say that another thing the 505 has going for it is battery life. I charged it up yesterday and I have given it a work out since, giving demos to people at work, and the battery indicator is still on full. If that was the iLiad, it would be completely flat by now, no joke.

Well, I am looking forward to hanging out with you in here. See you all around.

and to make matters worse, I hadn't opened Digital Editions in several months. So when I did, it would not even let me fully open the program--it immediately required me to do a software update, which erased the authorization info, so I had to pick one of them to try.

I chose to use the Adobe ID under which I downloaded a Library book to my Mac, but now it won't even open that! When I plug in the PRS-505, I can't find any way to look up which Adobe ID *it* is authorized to.

Adobe is completely non-responsive on telling me how to de-authorize ADE on a computer, and/or find out which ID A Reader is authorized to.

Any gurus here?

Help!

Sort by date - not working right

Since I got my Reader back from Sony after a broken substrate, the "sort by date" on the Reader doesn't work.

Well, it sort-of works. The ebooks are all there, in reverse-added order. But they're all showing up under *today*, regardless of the actual date. (It lists the date. But they're all listed under the 1st tab number.) See attached image.

Anyone know what causes this, or how to fix it? If it turns out not to be fixable, I won't worry; it's a nuisance, but not a major hassle.

Background techie info:
I haven't used the Sony Library since I got my Reader back from them; it's on the computer that's currently down. It's not on my laptop. I can't easily re-download it; I have dialup internet at home. (I downloaded it from work before, and brought it home on a flash drive. However, either work changed its internet permissions or Sony changed it's download method; now when I try to download, I get a 10kb mini-program that won't run. I suspect work has disabled some .exe downloads.)

If I must, I'll set aside a couple of hours to re-download it (I remember it being somewhat more than 20mb?) to install on the laptop. I'd rather not, though.

Have not re-installed firmware, either. Have same problem with trying to download it. (Not sure how I can tell what version of firmware my Reader is running.) Can't download from work, but I remember the firmware being nonpainful to download from home.

Haven't installed the PRC Customizer. I'm considering it because it's got some features I'd like, but I'm nervous about doing it on top of not-quite-working firmware.

Have installed books through Calibre. Mostly, I use Windows to install/uninstall ebooks with drag-and-drop.

I have Windows XP on three different computers (home, work, laptop). Not sure if that matters.

After my EB1150 died 2 weeks ago, I decided it was time to try an eInk device.
I found out that the PRS-505 is cheaper than it used to be and I bought a grey one on eBay.
My first impression is very good. I miss the on-line dictionary I had on the EB1150, but this little wonder is very nice and friendly.

Cheap case and Skin from Amazon UK

In my continual quest to find a silicon skin that I can put my PRS505 into, and then that into a case, I came across two items on Amazon UK. Links below

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0028UM5BC/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002EPDIIU/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

I have ordered them and I shall post a review or pics when they arrive in a week or two.

I like the look of the silicon skin as it all likes quite well covered, but it actualy has cut outs on the spine/hinge area suggesting it will fit nicely in a normal case, also the power button is not covered (like it was in the proporta one) meaning it should be much easier to turn on and off.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/..._ya_oh_product

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/..._ya_oh_product

I have ordered them and I shall post a review or pics when they arrive in a week or two.

I like the look of the silicon skin as it all likes quite well covered, but it actualy has cut outs on the spine/hinge area suggesting it will fit nicely in a normal case, also the power button is not covered (like it was in the proporta one) meaning it should be much easier to turn on and off.

Ultimatly I am hoping that the reader will fit in the skin, and then in the case, but we shall see.

Can I delete the Digital Editions\Thumbnails PNGs?

When I view the few photos I've stored on my PRS-505, I also see a bunch of book covers listed as being able to be viewed as well. While browsing the internal memory, I found these book cover images in this directory:

E:\Digital Editions\Thumbnails\database\media\books

The funny thing is, there are book cover images in this directory for books I've DELETED off my device. I've connected to the device with both Calibre and Adobe Digital Editions, so I'm not sure if these image files were created when I read the ePubs on the PRS-505 or when I connected to it with Adobe Digital Editions. None of the books on my reader are DRM secured.

Any reason why I shouldn't delete them? Any way I can stop them from getting created in the future?

When importing other than .lrf into the Library how does one get the title and author to display properly - can you edit the file parameters before importing or somehow edit the entry display after importing?

Once, soon after I got my 505, I plugged it into my phone's wall charger (same USB connectors) to recharge. It totally depleted the charge. Why is that? And how can you tell what kind of USB will work? The connections are the same, to look at. Kind of freaked me out; I thought I had broken the reader.
